handfuls of delight
I love sparkle and whimsy and fanciful delight. I love out-of-the-ordinary treats and special moments.
I ordered Jake a tux yesterday… This will be the second he’s worn in his life (the first being for our wedding!), and his first owned tuxedo.
I also ordered myself a sparkly red dress and beige heels and a classy white coat to wear over the top. Jake gets a matching red bow tie, cufflinks, and pocket square, too.
We’re going to our first winter black tie work event next month, and I’m so excited!
This is novelty!
…But novelty can also come in small moments. Tiny delights. Micro pleasures that fit into the palm of your hand and the crevices of spare moments within your busy days.
Whimsy can be finding yourself a delicious new flavor of herbal tea for a nightly treat. It can be rubbing the soft skin of your partner’s neck. It can be getting cozy on your lunch break with half an episode of your favorite show.
Delights include the color of the sky, at many points during the day, as the horizon, clouds, and hues show off. They include a nourishing meal, a day trip, and a great audiobook. That feeling of sinking into bed after just washing your sheets. The smell of a freshly blown-out match filling the room. The warmth coming from the fireplace. The saturating sunshine soaking into your skin through the window.
Everything matters. Big and small.
P.S. More on joy and micro delights:
