unusual whimsy

Last night, my husband and I were totally spent from the day, but we sat down to look into a couple work things… Not working, just following up on a couple curiosities and loose ends we had been talking about.

Sharing our jobs on this level has been really fun and rewarding; we both work for the same company now, for the first time ever, and we get to enjoy a deeper understanding of each other’s work. Even though our roles are entirely different and we don’t actually collaborate at work much at all, the work we each do overlaps enough that we have a great time sharing stories and asking questions, and it feels special to see each other at work sometimes and to know that what we both do relates, even if distantly, to the other.

Looking into a couple of benefit things and events coming up led to finding out my husband has enough paid time off banked to take three weeks off work, which neither of us knew, and which we were very excited about!

Then we rabbit trailed over into another internet tab as we started talking about visiting Sea World, which he first brought up over the weekend, and we’ve been meaning to book tickets. Thanks to a black friday deal, we got two tickets for the price of one, and we also got a great discount on the already worthwhile all-day dining. (All-day dining passes are a little known secret and the BEST way to save money when visiting any sort of park like this! We did this at Knotts Berry Farm last spring for my birthday, and our food passes MADE THE DAY. It was a huge convenience, money saver, and stress reducer. We’re so proud of ourselves for this discovery and to utilize it again somewhere else. 😂) (Also: is this money-saving hack and excitement proof that we’ve become grown ups? 😂)

It was super exciting and lovely to book a fun day together and look forward to when we’ll be able to go. I checked out some hotels we might want to stay at for the night, and the first one we found looked perfect, very nice, and cheap! All around a win.

Fancy date! Couple adventures! Romance and intentional attention! Shaking some sparkles into our mundane everyday!

This is what it comes down to: humans need delight, novelty, whimsy, joy, play, romance, adventure, and attentiveness. We need love. We need to enjoy our time and enjoy each other. We crave quality connection, however that looks for each of us.

Last night was so much fun because, even though we were both tired and had big days (it was almost exactly 12 hours between when I left our house and when I returned!), we didn’t just melt into a puddle and watch tv or numb out. We broke up the day, the week, the could-be “hum drum” routine. We connected. We did something very out of the ordinary, we talked about plans for the future, we geeked out over dolphins and orcas and saving money on food passes. 😆 We envisioned this fun day together and had a blast planning it.

We snuggled and got into bed early and watched an episode of Friends. I touched Jake’s face I love so much, and his soft skin, and we talked about remembering what it felt like to first fall in love. 💕

We went to sleep, happy and tired, yet more recharged than if we hadn’t had this unusual, out of the ordinary, simple but delightful, connective evening.

We went to sleep content.

Don’t forget to notice the magic and shake some sparkles in! At least a dash, as often as you can! This is our one wild and precious life, and time is a strange, warp-y mystery, and we don’t want to miss the whole point in being here in the first place!

lots of love
